The South Carolina Family-Friendly Summer Bucket List You Didn’t Know You Needed

Ciera Young, Licensed Professional Counselor at Beyond the White Couch

Black family, kite and outdoor fun with parents and children having fun and playing outside at a park in nature. Energy, love and running while being active and bonding with man, woman and kids

Summer sounds like freedom—until you realize you’re in charge of the fun. Between work schedules, tight budgets and the pressure to “make memories,” it can feel more stressful than sunny. If you’ve ever Googled “free stuff to do with kids near me” while reheating coffee and hearing “I’m bored” for the fifth time, you’re not alone.

This list isn’t about perfection—it’s about simple joy, low-cost adventures and moments your kids will remember (even if you forget the sunscreen).

Let’s Talk Free (and Almost-Free) Family Fun

South Carolina is full of free and affordable things to do—from splash pads to science centers, trails to markets. Whether you’re in the Upstate, Midlands, Lowcountry, or somewhere in between, this list will help you make memories without maxing out your wallet.

Around the Upstate

Around the Midlands

Around the Lowcountry

Around the Pee Dee

  • Pee Dee State Farmers Market Located on U.S. Highway 52 between Florence and Darlington, this market boasts everything from fresh produce to flowers to unique crafts.
  • Movies at McLean in North Myrtle Beach Enjoy a free movie under the stars as a family! Movies are shown on the second Friday of each month through October.
  • Little Pee Dee State Park in Dillon  Swim, paddle or fish on Lake Norton. Hike or bike the trails. Visit the playground or enjoy a meal outside together. With no admission fee and beautiful views, you can’t go wrong.

 Around the State

  • Summer Reading Programs at Your Local Library – South Carolina counties (Greenville, Spartanburg, Charleston, Lexington, and more) offer reading challenges, storytimes, and prizes from May to July.
  • Home Depot Kids Workshop – Free monthly hands-on building workshops at every SC Home Depot; your child gets a project, apron, and collectible pin.
  • Regal Summer Movie Express – $2 family movies on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Regal theaters throughout SC—perfect for a midday escape.

A Friendly Reminder

You don’t need a perfectly planned summer—just a few good moments. Splash pad giggles, a random market snack, or that one time you let them lead and ended up having more fun than expected.

Show up. Stay flexible. And don’t forget to make time for you, too—rest counts as part of the plan.

If you check out any of these spots, tag @scparents on Instagram. We’d love to see your family making memories across the Palmetto State—and you might even get featured!
